Studies show that there are over 8 million black house holds with an internet connection at home. To put that in perspective, that means that 54 percent of black households can access the same mass of information as the rest of America. As African Americans, we are exposed to a multitude of media influences, but only a small percentage of them are directed toward the black demographic. That’s the number 1 reason why African American internet users should be aware of the choices of black websites on the web.

There is a growing number of black websites that offer extremely useful information that caters to an entire culture. Unfortunately in many cases, owners of black websites need to reconsider their marketing and take advantage of methods that will get them in front of the largest audience possible.

According to a survey for ARAnet conducted by Opinion Research Corp, in March 2010, about 14% of African American Web users were “very likely” to respond to a banner ad, compared to 5% of white Internet users. This opens the door to an ubundance of opportunities for black website owners to market to their target demographic. And there are no shortage of methods. Websites can use banner ads, search engine optimization, media buys, PPC, CPA networks, email campaigns, guest blogging the national press and more.

According to a national study including more than 7,000 African American adults, the typical amount of time spent online is 4 hours and 21 minutes per day. A figure that is over 10% higher than the number of all U.S. adults. This represents an extreme shift in the way African Americans access media. The implications of this are far reaching. Not only for black internet users but for black websites. The first step is to raise the collective consciousness of the sources of information available to black internet users.

As an African American Business owner, I want to do my part. So I’ve compiled a list of my recommended black websites along with the top 10 most influential black websites on the web.
